By slow, easy stages, and celebrated in the press along the way, he journeyed to Paris in December 1797. The distance is 300 miles, which by coach must have taken him about week. The obvious route is via Charente, Vienne, Tours, Orleans and onto Paris but whatever route he took, he would have passed through an enormous slice of France and spoken with a wide range of people.
