The convoy splits up again around this time. Tom's ship spots the coast of South America on the 16th of June, 18 days out from Cape Verde through the doldrums and over the equator. Near the small island of Trindade, east of Rio where Trade winds and currents want to push ships southeast, many of the convoy head for the Cape of Good Hope. Tom’s ship stays 16 days in the area.
