Muir lived in Chantilly for 4 months before he died. Between September 1798 and January 1799. Pain had lived there some time before. Rents would certainly have been cheaper than in Paris and he may have wanted to escape the attention of British government spies. Cut off from his family, his health in bad shape and among a demoralised Scots and Irish refugee community post ’98 in Paris he may just have wanted to escape.
