I first visited Dublin in 1987 when a group of us hitched a lift from Belfast. Three art students in Theresa McKenna’s spare room. Dublin was also where I got to work with Declan McGonagle making ‘Guilt by Association’ at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in ‘92. After these initial visits it was 20 years before I got back to the city. I proposed to research the ‘Dublin’ square with Sean Lynch while sharing a residency with him at Covepark in Argyll. Sean generously organized some teaching time for me with MAVIS, the MA in Visual Art Practices department at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, design & Technology giving me the opportunity to explore the city and make a series of photographs for this project.

Thomas spends a week in Dublin in the middle of July 1793. During this time he visits, and probably stays with, the Currans in the Priory Rathfarnham.

Tom
Dublin must have felt very like Edinburgh to Tom as he rode in on the stage from Belfast on the last week of July 1793. Key buildings like the Four Courts by the river were under construction while the infrastructure for the Royal Canal was being surveyed and laboriously dug by teams of workmen. The sons of merchants were establishing themselves as the progressive force in the city. Old landed Protestant families were being challenged by liberal thinkers like John Curran another lawyer who took on the representation of clients whose case would often highlight the iniquity of the old regime.

To provide finance for the whole research trip, the artist Sean Lynch organised teaching for me within institutions where he works.
