On his way to prepare a case in Edinburgh, Tom sets out from Glasgow on the 2^nd of January 1793. Early on in this 15-hour coach trip they take a break at Holytown.  Somehow the Messenger at Arms from the courts in Edinburgh catches up with the coach here and serves Tom with his papers on the steps of the carriage.
