Tom travels this road in January 1793 with a lot on his mind. As an avid observer of the Revolution in France, he’s on his way to see the country for the first time. However he’s also got his own court case pending in Edinburgh so the circumstances are difficult. He’d spoken for the Scot’s reform movement while in London and is now on his way to try to meet with the Convention in Paris. So you can imagine his emotional state as he travels post chase from Dartford through Chatham and Canterbury to Dover.
