It’s unclear why once they’re within sight of Madeira, on the 11th of May 1794, it takes a week to reach the next point of reference only a short distance away. Organising the fleet must have had something to do with it. The convoy made up of ships bound for trade in the Mediterranean and an American group probably split here.
