30th July 1793. Sailing from Ireland to Scotland the ship sails out of Belfast harbour passing Bangor, Copeland Island, and out over the North Channel. How long would this take? It takes 2 hours on the ferries now, so possibly 6 or 8 hours? He has developed a sympathetic relationship with the American Captain and persuades him to sail in close to Portpatrick where he transfers Thomas from his big transatlantic ship to a small boat and onto dry land at Portpatrick.
