Sailing close by on the 3rd of April 1796 the ship is hailed by islanders. For the first time they decide to make closer investigation. Tom and a French officer, picked up from Amsterdam Island before Tom, row ashore. Contact is uncertain and hesitant on both sides and after one failed attempt, islanders agree to let Tom and others ashore. They stay 2 nights anchored offshore.
