On the 4th of August 1793 Tom in chains and leg irons is bundled into a coach and escorted to the tollbooth in Edinburgh. This journey must have been 2 days on the road and perhaps more. The coach would probably have rolled out of Stanraer through Ballintrae, Girvan, Maybole, Ayr, Cumnock, Douglas and Carnwath before it hit town.
