Tom lands here on the 12th of August 1796. In accounts from the time the port is described as low lying and mosquito-ridden. For Tom at the end of four months of sailing in dangerous seas, the forthcoming leg must have looked straightforward. Disembarking with the rest, the Captain grants Tom alone leave to quit San Blas and move on to the near by hill station where conditions were better.
